Beauty and Function by Gray Space
About two years ago I totally renovated my living and dining rooms in my very first One Room Challenge! It was an amazing and transformative experience… it was even published on housebeautiful.com! In that project, we elevated our space with paint, window treatments, an 11 foot fireplace wall and of course new furniture. You can read all about it here: One Room Challenge. At the time with such a huge renovation, I knew that I could not work a new sofa into the budget, so I pulled the sofa bed from our guest room and repurposed it in the new space with hopes that one day we could replace it a dream sofa! Well… that day is here!
This year I had the pleasure of partnering with one of my favorite upholstery companies, Interior Define and I have finally ordered our dream sofa! I wanted to share that process with you and also a few tips on what to look for when making a large upholstery purchase for your family to use for years to come.
I first learned of Interior Define from one of our client’s. She was interested in a chaise lounge, specifically the Caitlin Chaise. It turned out beautifully in her office lounge space and while placing that order I started browsing the Interior Define website and fell in love with the brand. Here’s a photo of her chaise!
Prior to launching fully into a search for the perfect sofa. I had to first identify what I really wanted. So I asked myself a a series of questions to figure it out and wanted to share those with you in hopes that you are able to identify the type of seating that’s best for your home now or in the future;
What type of sofa do you want? Sofa, Sectional, Loveseat?
How many people would you like it to sit?
Do you prefer a plush or firm seat?
What’s your budget?
How much space do you have in the room for your new sofa?
What’s your preferred sofa style? Traditional, modern, etc.
What type of fabric do you prefer? Do you need performance fabric, do you like velvet, etc.?
Asking these questions in advance will lead you to the perfect piece.
For me, the Sloan Sectional checked all of those boxes. At 8 feet x 8 feet, it it’s fits 5 people comfortably, has a really plush seat which I love at the end of a long day and for those Sunday afternoon naps, fits my contemporary aesthetic and comes in the perfect color for my space. Bonus: It comes in a stain resistant performance fabric, perfect for the kids and the dog. It was perfect. Here she is!
